The Side Effects of Fertility Drugs

Many of the prescription drugs on the market today have side effects. Generally speaking, a side effect is an unintended reaction to a specific medication. From this standpoint, almost any medication will have some sort of side effect and fertility drugs are not exception to this rule.

Generally, there are two types of fertility drugs. The first type is given in a pill form, an example of this type of drug would be Clomid. The other type of fertility drugs are administered by injection, some examples of this type of drug include, Gonal-F, Follistim, and Repronex. Usually, the injectible fertility drugs have fewer side effects than those that come in a pill form.Image may be NSFW.

A side effect that is often common with both types of these fertility drugs is the risk of multiple egg fertilization. Approximately 50% of the women who take fertility drugs will become pregnant with multiple babies. Multiple pregnancies in themselves carry their own inherent risks, which should be explained by your doctor before you begin taking the fertility drugs.

Another concern with both types of fertility drugs is the increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. A few studies have been conducted which suggest that drugs used to induce ovulation like Clomid, can increase the ovarian cancer risk.

The  most common side effects specifically associated with Clomid (used to stimulate ovulation) occur in approximately 10 to 14 percent of the women who take. These side effects include enlargement of the ovaries and the severe hot flashes. Side effects that occur in about 6 percent of the women who take Clomid include pelvic and abdominal discomfort or bloating, problems with vision, nausea, and sore breasts. Less than two percent of women who take Clomid will experience side effects that include bleeding of the uterus or headaches. Additionally, a few women have reported that Clomid caused hostile cervical mucus, which led to more fertility issues.

Before taking any prescription medication you should be aware of all of the risks associated with it.
